Africa has long had the reputation of being a continent of non-readers. However, this is changing. School and self-help books are selling, as is literature. The network of public libraries in Kenya is expanding slowly but steadily. More than 10 percent of the population are registered users of a library.

Elimu Asilia: Documenting Kenya's indigenous knowledge online

Indigneous knowledge in Kenya has been passed down from one generation to another by word of mouth. the National Museums of Kenya and the Alumni Denkfabrik (think tank) of the Goethe-Institut Kenya have teamed up on a project to collect, document and disseminate this knowledge. The knowledge collected so far can be accessed from the website "Elimu Asilia".
