Creative Reading

German-Lebanese Literature Workshops for Children

November 12th till 17th 2007

One year after the Lebanon war five German-speaking children's book authors, five Lebanese counterparts and a theatre artist conducted literature workshops for children and young people in different libraries and schools in Lebanon, from November 12th until 16th 2007. The workshops were held in Beirut, Baaklin, Bint-Jbeil, Halba and Zahle.

Pairs of German-Lebanese authors developed creative interpretations with children and young people on the basis of a group reading of German and Lebanese children’s storybooks. Picture books, stories, comic illustrations and a theatre play were created. The workshop participants showed the public the results of their work at a closing event, on November 17th, 3 p.m., at the Monnot Theatre, in Beirut Achrafieh. The works will subsequently be shown in different libraries and schools in Lebanon and are also documented online.

The literature workshops were being held under the High Patronage of H.E. Dr Tarek Mitri, Minister of Culture, and are organised by the Goethe-Institut Lebanon, UNESCO Regional Office – Beirut, ASSABIL, Friends of public libraries association and the Lebanese Ministry of Culture, with the kind support of the German Federal Foreign Office.
