“My drawings are very much based on visual input. Therefore being in a new environment always has a big impact on my work.
When I was in Malaysia for the first time in Summer 2010, it was also my first time in Asia altogether. It was visually overwhelming. The temples and dragons, the strange fruit and food, flora and fauna and the entire atmosphere being so completely different from everything I experienced before. These were lots of new impressions to work with. I ended up with a big series of drawings that I showed in two exhibitions called "Malaysian Species" - one still in Kuala Lumpur and one in Frankfurt/Main.
Being here for the second time I find myself focus on the less obvious things. The culture shock has worn off, but there is still so much to see and ingest. Probably this time the outcome of my work will be a bit more quiet and subtle, but still distinctly strange in every sense of the word.”
