Steinmetz has a special focus on East German media history before and after the fall of the Berlin wall and on the transition from old to new media. 

He is a member of the publishing advisory board of the Historical Journal of Film, Radio & Television (Carfx/Taylor&Francis, Abingdon/Oxfordshire) and publisher of the series „Media Studien /Media Studies“ of the Leipzig University Press.
