1957 Establishment of the „German Reading Room“ at the Metropole Hotel;

1960 Renamed in "German Cultural Centre”
Moved to new building on 256 Sarwar Shaheed Road, Karachi
1962 Signing of Agreement on Cultural Relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan
1964 Renamed “Goethe-Institut Karachi”
1968 The Goethe Medal awarded to Mr Mumtaz Hasan (Translator of Pakistani literature from Punjabi, Under Secretary of the Government of India in 1930; Finance Member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council; Secretary Finance 1952-59)
1972-76 Increase of participants in German language courses to 600 students
1980’s The institute becomes a meeting place free of censorship.
1988 Establishment of “German Educated Pakistanis Welfare Association” (GEPWA) for academic returnees from Germany.
1992 Establishment of  the PGFA "Pakistan-German Friendship Association" 
1995 Visit of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr Roman Herzog to the Goethe-Institut
1996 Klaus von Bismarck Prize given to Mr Sadiq Parvaiz for 40 years of duty
1998 Closure of Goethe-Institut in Lahore for reasons of financial constraints
1999 All staff members of the Goethe-Institut Karachi are awarded the Klaus-von- Bismarck Prize for excellent work during a time when the institute had no director. On behalf of all staff members, award was  accepted by Ms. Uroosa Siddiqui, Head of Finance & Administration.
2001 From Dec. 2001 onwards the team of the Goethe-Institut moved their offices to the German Consulate due to security reasons. All cultural activities were suspended.
2003 End of lease agreement for the institute building on Sarwar Shaheed Road
2004 Official re-opening of  Goethe-Institut Karachi in the new premises at 2, Brunton Road, Civil Lines, Karachi with following guests of honor:
  • Mohammedmian Soomro, Chairman Senate of Pakistan
  • Dr. Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Chief Minister of Sindh
  • Dr. Christoph Bruemmer, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Pakistan
  • Ms. Verena Graefin von Roedern, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Karachi
  • Dr. Habil Andreas Schlüter, Secretary General of Goethe-Institut Germany
  • Mr Eberhard Weller, Director South Asia, Goethe-Institut New Delhi
2005 Intensification of cooperation between Goethe-Institut Karachi and the Alliance Francaise Karachi
2006 Renamed “Goethe-Institut Pakistan”
