Annemarie Schimmel – Life and work

Annemarie Schimmel ( 1922 – 2003) was a German scholar who at the age of 23 became a professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Marburg. She published more than 50 books on Islamic literature, mysticism and culture, and translated Persian, Urdu, Arabic, Sindhi and Turkish poetry and literature into English and German. For her work the government of Pakistan honored her with its highest civil awards known as Sitara-e-Imtiaz or 'Star of Excellence', and Hilal-e-Imtiaz or 'Crescent of Excellence'.

Stefan Weidner – editor in chief of “Fikrun wa Fann” (Art and Thought) - on the 10th anniversary of Annemarie Schimmel’s death will moderate a debate with scholars and pupils on the life and work of the famous scholar. “Fikrun wa Fann” - Goethe-Institut’s cultural magazine that encourages the dialogue between Germany and Islam - was founded in 1963 by Annemarie Schimmel und Albert Theile.
