Conditions for setting up a Reading Room

The Goethe-Institut and the host library sign a contract of loan. This regulates the collaboration between the two parties as follows:

  • The aim is a stock profile, which is tailored to the needs of indentified user groups and based on the core stock for the German Reading Room made available to the host library free of charge.
  • The host library makes a room available free of charge which can be used to house the stock separately and make it freely accessible to all users.
  • The host library selects a German-speaking librarian to be responsible for the reading room.
  • His/her salary is then paid by the host library.
  • The Goethe-Institut provides linguistic and specialist training for the librarian responsible for the Reading Room.
  • The host library publicises the facilities of the German Reading Room throughout its catchment area.
  • The host library houses and maintains the material and equipment provided by the Goethe-Institut.
  • The stock of the German Reading Room is available for loan (except reference works).
  • Further supply of current media, continuation of journal subscriptions and training programmes are dependent on the granting of further funds to the Goethe-Institut.
  • The host library reports regularly to the local Goethe-Institut and to the Head Office in Munich about the use of the German Reading Room, its development, and the main subject areas for further collection development.
