Excursion to Manaus, Coari, Iranduba and Manacapuru in the Amazon region

Amazon, 12 to 19 August 2006

In August 2006, the experts involved in the music theatre project set off on a week-long excursion organized by the Piatam Center in Manaus with Antonio Carlos Witkoski. The excursion brings the Brazilian and German experts closer together. Three days of discussions and workshops in Manaus are followed by short research trips to the world of the Amazon – the journey takes the experts to Santa Luzia do Buiuçuzinho (Coari), Santa Luzia da Ilha do Baixio (Iranduba) and Nossa Senhora das Graças (Manacapuru).

Flight to Manaus and tour of the city

14 Aug.
Conference with welcome speeches by Alexandre Almir Ferreira Rivas, Fernando Pellon de Miranda, Joachim Bernauer and José Wagner Garcia; followed by presentations:

  • Presentation by the Piatam research group “land”, “forest”, “water” (flora e fauna)
  • “Earth, woods and water: Life and way of life of the fluvial population on the river Solimões”, by Antonio Carlos Witkoski
  • “The cabocla-ribeirinha culture: myths, legends and transculturality”, by Therezinha de Jesus Pinto Fraxe

15 Aug.
Flight over the Manaus region with a view of the city and of the confluence of the Rio Negro and Rio Solimões
Lectures by Eduardo Batalha Viveiros de Castro and Laymert Garcia dos Santos with a follow-up discussion

16 Aug.
Excursion to the people who live on the banks of the Amazon:

  • Flight to the oil region of Urucu
  • Boat trip to Santa Luzia do Buiuçuzinho (Municipality of Coari), talks with the local school headmistress Elza da Silva Rodrigues

17/18 Aug.
Second excursion to the people who live on the banks of the Amazon:

  • Boat trip to the Solimões river, to the community Nossa Senhora das Graças (Municipality of Manacapuru), reception by Rondinei da Silva Santos; excursions on small boats into the flooded rain forest, night-time visit to a Catholic mass
  • Visit to the community Santa Luzia da Ilha do Baixio (Municipality of Iranduba)
