Biography

Irina Abzhandadze created her photo series from 1999 to 2003, inspired by a real incident. On one hand, the project is bound up with a painful personal experience in the artist’s life, and on the other hand it reflects an aspect of recent Georgian history. Irina Abzhandadze’s work was profoundly influenced by the murder of her best friend, an innocent 18-year-old girl. The crime remains unsolved, and the murderer therefore has gone unpunished. Following this personal tragedy, the artist was overwhelmed by tremendous anger and a sense of powerlessness in the face of injustice and indifference.
