Artists

With 16 photo and video works from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Germany, this exhibition illustrates ways in which artists perceived and interpreted the dynamic processes of change after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. It focuses on artistic encounters with that “turbulent” time and sees itself as an experiential approach to this complex theme.

Most of these artistic statements, in their often bitter, ironic seriousness, encourage more profound awareness of one’s own situation and openness about one’s fears and problems. And so this exhibition serves in part to spur, and claim, greater public understanding for these issues.
