"There is a huge precipice between how people try to think and reality": five female curator from Russia tell about their profession.

The world has long ago gone beyond the limits of the duality of feminism and patriarchal conservatism.

[Russia | Vladivostok] In Moscow, the art manager and curator Yana Gaponenko worked in the gallery of Aidan Salakhova and studied in the Baza Institute and in the curators’ school of the V – A – C Foundation. In Vladivostok, she coordinated the first residence of the ZARYA Center for Contemporary Art, she did the projects of the Goethe-Institute in Novosibirsk and arranged exhibitions as an independent curator. In 2015, she established the Vladivostok School of Contemporary Art (VSMA), a laboratory of art organized by the subjects of the local art world.

Converter has talked to the co-founder of VSMA about the #MeToo action, transgenders and the contemporary art in Vladivostok. More ...

The behavioral model of a ‘strong woman’ is widespread in Kazan

[Russia | Kazan] Little is known in Russia about the contemporary art of Tatarstan — a strong artistic scene in the 1990s and the Smena Center of Contemporary Culture in the 2010s. Traditional museums demonstrate actual practices cautiously and irregularly, but the situation must change. The State Art Museum of RT is about to finish reconstruction of the former halls of the Union of Artists to house the Gallery of Contemporary Art. The curator duo of the new institution, Natalya Pankina and Luiza Nizamova, has shared their own experience of institutional construction with Converter and told us about their attitude to feminitives, ‘strong women’ and ageism.More ...

Es gib eine riesige Kluft zwischen dem Wunschdenken und der Realität

[Russia | Krasnoyarsk] The Ploshchad Mira Museum Center in Krasnoyarsk is the former Lenin museum in the USSR which has been able to reset into a site for demonstrating contemporary art. Maria Bukova has been leading the institution for already two years. She did not dump the important projects that had existed (the institution is still conducting the oldest Russian biennale) and contributed to the appearance of new ones — for the first time since 1987, the ‘Lenin rooms’ changed their exhibits, and two new exhibitions — “The Dark Side of the Soviet Life” and “In the Grip of Ideology” were held. Maria Bukova‘s merits were appreciated by the Russian expert community. Yet, not all the functionaries in Krasnoyarsk are in a hurry to recognize the competence of the new leader.More ...

Not my gender but, rather, my age was a barrier

[Russia | Ekaterinburg] Alisa Prudnikova plays it big. Enumeration of the projects in which she has participated, her merits and awards, memberships in respected associations and councils would require a special text. Briefly speaking, she headed the Ural branch of the State Center for Contemporary Art (GCSI) at the age of 23, she designed the Ural Industrial Biennale of Contemporary Art and successfully held it four times, and this year, she launched the program called NEMOSKVA and organized a Trans-Siberian railway tour for the experts and curators from the whole world.

Alisa told Converter how she found a common language with CEOs and directors, from the CEO of Uralmashzavod, Yekaterinburg, to the director of Neue Pinakothek, Munich, and confided why combatting femininity is not her life program. More ...

    The weak will become strong

[Russia | Krasnodar] Artistic self-organization — this is about Lena Ishchenko. She investigated artists’ initiatives in the regions of Russia for Garage museum, she did not give up the Aroundart.org website after its sponsor left and raised the funds for her first curator project “In-between Fatigue: towards New Forms of Life” together with her colleague Antonina Trubitsyna. In 2017, she left Moscow to become the chief curator of the Typography Center for Contemporary Art in Krasnodar, a southern city, firmly associated with resorts and Cossacks.

Lena has enough experience, but the issue of equality in the world of contemporary Russian art has not yet been solved: the problem of the gender balance has not been solved, there are more men artists, and feminitives remain to be marker words. More ...
