The father of the A format

Walter Porstmann was born on 8 March, 1886 in Geyersdorf, Germany. He studied at the universities of Erlangen, Kiel and Leipzig. Graduated in Mathematics, Physics and Applied Mathematics.

1917
Published a work on standards which came to the attention of Waldemar Hellmich, the first director of DIN.

1918–1920
Published his doctor’s thesis, »Examination of the structure and composition of the measurement system«. Took his postgraduate degree in Functional Theory, Thermodynamics and Meteorology.

1920–1923
Worked for the German industry’s stand ards committee, where he, among other things, worked on formulating a standardised format system. In August 1922, DIN 476 was launched, a format standard developed by Porstmann.

1923
Appointed director of the German company Fabriknorm GmbH.

1944
Is awarded the DIN honorary ring.
After the Second World War, Porstmann resumed working for the German standards committee. He published 16 books, 450 essays and over 630 reports and book reviews.

1959
Dr. Walter Porstmann died and was given an honorary funeral in Berlin.
