Dear Cineasts,
Welcome to the German Film Festival in Singapore!
Celebrating our 15th year, we are pleased to present a special selection of the best German film productions and co-productions of the recent years.
The new releases, which have enthused audiences and juries alike and have taken home numerous prizes from international film festivals such as the Berlinale and Cannes, display the many facets of contemporary German cinema and range from comedies, dramas and intricate love stories to biographies of Germany’s famous and infamous as well as pulse-raising thrillers – so this year’s selection is most definitely everybody’s cup of tea!
The festival opens with Almanya - Welcome to Germany, which premiered at the 2011 Berlinale and won this year’s “Best Film” Award. In a humorous and subtly ironical way, it portrays the story of the Turkish Émigré family Yilmaz in Germany, the cross-cultural struggles, which the three generation of the extended family have to face, and vividly depicts “the differences between east and west – and what can happen, if the two should meet" (The Hollywood Reporter). The film script, a colourful concoction of anecdotes from the life of the two young filmmakers Yasemin and Nesrin Samdereli and their friends, won the German Film Award.
We are delighted to announce that the Samdereli sisters, together with the lead actor in their film, Vedat Erincin, will be present for the opning screening of Almanya- Welcome to Germany.
“Film, that was my life” – Bernd Eichinger once said in an interview and looking back to the life’s work of one of Germany’s – and Hollywood’s – foremost producers, scriptwriters, and filmmakers, whose career was brought to a halt by his sudden death in early 2011, this certainly rings true. In a span of 30 years, Eichinger, who was as famed for his skills as a producer as well as his reluctance to take the part of the financier solely (he frequently took over several parts of the production process, erasing the boundaries between producer, director and screenwriter), produced more than 70 films in every imaginable genre, comedies, action, thrillers, and (historical) dramas, all earmarked by his distinct style and individual cinematic brushwork.
To commemorate and recognise Eichinger’s invaluable contributions in the field of film, we are presenting a series of highlights and personal milestones spanning his career, starting with A Girl called Rosemarie, which he directed, his medieval thriller The Name of the Rose and the Academy Award- winning Nowhere in Africa, to the Oscar-winning Downfall and his highly personalised screenplay of the ‘German Autumn’, The Baader Meinhof Complex.
And then there is another ‘Schmankerl’* for Cineasts this year… as part of our 15th anniversary, the best of 14 years of GFF will be screened again and whatever film it is you may have missed (actually and metaphorically speaking), this is your chance to watch it again…!
