Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra
and Goethe-Institut Bangkok
The Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) is under the patronage of the Royal Thai Government and the College of Music of Mahidol University. TPO´s primary goal is to gather the best musicians in Thailand so as to develop the orchestra and strive for national and international status. TPO is promoting arts, music and culture in Thailand. It performs and embraces every form of symphonic orchestra music, including ethnic and non-western compositions.
The Goethe-Institut has been furthering the musical development in Thailand for more 45 years. Our ambition for this engagement are quality and persistence. The cooperation with the new founded TPO is based on this tradition. Our promotion corresponds to the work of Gudni Emilsson as a conductor.
After a guest performance of the Tübingen Kammerorchester (Chamber Orchestra of the university city of Tübingen) in March 2005 the College of Music asked him to prepare the chamber orchestra for an International Music Competition in Interlaken. In September the “Dr. Sax Chamber Orchestra” attained the first prize in the category “Ensemble with more than 8 players”.
The successful and harmonious cooperation with the College of Music is continuing with 12 rehearsal periods and 24 concerts in 2006. The concerts will be given at the newly opened Philharmonic Hall at Salaya and in Bangkok.
GUDNI A. EMILSSON was born from an Icelandic family of musicians. In 1993 he was distinguished by the German Music Board as a promising young talent and recommended to the “Gewandhaus” Hall in Leipzig. In 1994 the “Herbert von Karajan” Foundation awarded Emilsson the “Conductor Prize” of the year, and the Foundation „LIND“ in Iceland also awarded him the special prize “Musician of the year“. In the same year he became the Principal Conductor of the renowned Youth Symphony Orchestra of Tübingen, with which he is invited to numerous concerts in Germany and abroad.
The Icelandic conductor studied violin and piano with his father and continued in Germany, where he graduated in piano and conducting. He gathered valuable experience by attending master classes by S. Celibidache, J.E. Gardiner, Myung Whun Chung and Ilya Musin. In 1998 he was appointed Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Tübinger Kammerorchester, which has had 63 international tours with famous soloists such as M. André, H. Holliger, N. Milstein, P. Rampal, M. Rostropowitsch and H. Szeryng.
Emilsson is familiar to the public in Barcelona, Plovdiv, Sofia, Stuttgart, Thessalonica, Reykjavik, Luxemburg, Osaka, Yokohama, Tokyo, Vienna. Since January 2000 Emilsson is working as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Suk Chamber Orchestra in Prague.
