Egypt 3rd Edition

The Science Film Festival was able to cover 16 out of 27 Egyptian Governorates. The festival took place from October 10 to December 4 with a selection of 23 movies dedicated to a wide range of important scientific questions around the Anthropocene. In cooperation with the Planetarium Science Center, Youthinkgreen and the Arab Academy of Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, a special program for university students was offered. Another goal achieved was to engage more partners who have access to underprivileged children, whether in big cities or in rural areas in Egypt. Through this effort, more than 500 child refugees were invited to screenings with the help of Caritas Egypt. Overall, more than 10,000 children - almost ten times the reach of past editions - were reached in Egypt.

More than 15 participants including science communicators, local festival coordinators, science teachers and more, participated in a two-day national activity workshop in Alexandria held by the team of the Planetarium Science Center in reference to the activity handbook produced by the Science Film Festival and translated into Arabic by the Goethe-Institut Alexandria. The workshop offered a space for exchanging ideas and methods of science communication and of dealing with children coming from different backgrounds and different age groups. The Festival-Hub was a two-day event organized by the Planetarium Science Center in December. The Hub was held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina with ongoing screenings and activities throughout the day including hands on activities, games and experiments related to the screenings. On these days, more than 3,000 Students from all over Alexandria took part with the help of more than 100 trained volunteers.

For the second year, the Academy of Scientific Research & Technology contributed financial support and provided the opportunity to tour with the festival in five different cities in Egypt. The Science Film Festival visited their Regional Research Centers in Tanta, Damanhour, Alsharkeya, Al Ismaileya and Al Mineya reaching more than 1 300 students from different age groups. Adding to this tour, 1,500 additional students were reached in different Governorates with the help of the Goethe-Institut‘s Bibliothekbus. The German embassy in Cairo and several German Organizations organized the event "Germany in the Nile Delta" from October 29 through November 2. The event hosted the Science Film Festival in Damanhour and Shibin el Kom. The screenings and workshops were organized by the PSC and Icealex.

The Science Film Festival in Egypt also launched its first edition of the video contest “#Mini Einstein”. Participants were asked to submit a short video that explains a challenging concept or theory of mathematics, natural and formal sciences, social sciences, or physics, in an engaging and creative way. The winners were selected based on the amount of shares and likes for each video on social media. “#Mini_Einstein” collected more than 600 likes and almost 1K shares for all videos, which gave the festival more exposure all over Egypt.

A special thanks goes to the partners, without whom none of the above would have been possible: Bibliotheca Alexandrina - Planetarium Science Center, Academy of Scientific Research & Technology, Caritas Egypt, Arab Academy for Science and Technology & Maritime Transport, Icealex, WESC, Youthinkgreen, Roy’a association in Al Qusair and many others.
