Bionic Exhibition - Learning from Nature

The Exhibition of Landesmuseum für Tecknik und Arbeit Mannheim

The term „bionics“ derives from a combination of the terms “biology” and “technology”. This young and interdisciplinary field of research and development is combining biology primarily with engineering science, architecture and mathematics. The intention of bionics is to transfer problem solving from nature to technology in order to make use of “inventions of the nature”, developed and optimised far millions of years.

The term “bionics” arose in the 1960s. Yet learning from nature has a long tradition. Centuries ago people tried vainly to arise up into the air with birdlike wing beats. The accurate simulation of avian flight producing per muscular strength propulsion and buoyancy at the same time, was leading into a blind alley. Otto Lilienthal was the first person who fulfilled the dream of flying, by concentrating himself on sheer volplane.

Meanwhile there are bionical methods of resolution in nearly every field of knowledge. Below we are presenting some of the most successful sections.

Flying and Swimming  Moving and Grabbing
 Cognition  Construction
 Benefit and Preservation  Optimization
