Biography

Yaşar Kemal was born in the southern Anatolian province of Adana in 1923 and was the only child in his village to learn how to read and write. He worked as a day laborer picking cotton, and as a shoemaker, factory worker, tractor driver, and village school teacher, amongst various other occupations. His first features were published in 1951 in the newspaper "Cumhuriyet". With the publication of his novel Memed, My Hawk in 1955 he became the most widely read Turkish author. Memed also marked his international breakthrough. Kemal’s works have been translated into more than forty languages to date. In 1997 he received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade (the laudatory speech at the award ceremony was held by Günter Grass). His numerous accolades include seventeen international and twelve Turkish prizes, as well as six honorary doctor degrees. Yaşar Kemal lives today in Istanbul.
