Biography

The writer Mario Levi was born in Istanbul in 1957. After studying French language and literature at Istanbul University, he worked, among other jobs, as a French teacher, an entrepreneur, a journalist, a radio editor and an advertising copywriter. His first articles were published in the newspaper “Salom”. Later he also wrote for various newspapers and magazines, including “Cumhuriyet”, “Milliyet Sanat”, “Argos” and “Varlik”. In 1990 Levi published his first collection of short stories, “Bir Sehre Gidememek”. This was followed two years later by his first novel, titled “En Güzel Ask Hikayemiz”. Levi’s work, which often reflects the feelings and attitudes of non-Muslim groups living in Turkey, has been honored with the Haldun Taner Short Story Award (1990) and the Yunus Nadi Novel Prize (2000). Mario Levi currently lives in Istanbul and teaches at Yeditepe University (Istanbul).
