Electroacoustic Music Festival and Competition

Sound in SPACE Festival: The Art of Electroacoustic Music Interpretation

Electroacoustic music speaker orchestra
GRM Speaker Orchestra

A three-day festival of electroacoustic music, will celebrate the beginnings of electroacoustic music in the 1950s, which grew out of the artistic competition of the French radio studios and the electronic studios in Germany. It will bring together prominent representatives of top-notch institutions in Germany, France and the USA and create performance opportunities for composers enrolled in US institutions through the Sound in Space competition.

Hydra Speaker-Orchestra
In 21st Century Europe, the composition and performance of electroacoustic music would not be thinkable without the so-called “Speaker-Orchestra”. With a large number of speakers (at least 32-40) specially placed and adjusted to fit the space, a new and live dramatic spatial sound choreography can be interpreted for each concert hall. This interpretation factor is little appreciated in the US and is realized in only a small number of concerts, which is why the festival places its main emphasis on the question of interpretation. For this reason all concerts will be performed with the Harvard University “Hydra” Speaker-Orchestra, which has advanced to an internationally respected instrument through many concerts in the last 6 years.

This program is made possible by the Goethe-Institut Boston, the Cultural Services of the French Consulate Boston, Harvard University, Northeastern University and is supported by the Elysée Treaty Fund for Franco-German Cultural Events in Third Countries.
