In 1913, old structures in the arts, music, literature, psychology, and many other fields were shattered. The European paintings by men like Picasso, Matisse and Duchamps in New York’s Armory Show made art in America look old; Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder made Mozart sound old; in Paris Coco Chanel made sexiness look new; but Josef Stalin, writing a treatise about nationalism in Vienna, knew that Europe’s bourgeoisie was as old as Austria’s Kaiser and its political systems as superannuated as the Habsburg Empire. Although Oswald Spengler was writing his Decline of the West, no one expected that within four years the old world had been completely destroyed.

In the course of the year, we will be examining key works of the period that convey the political, social, and ethical concerns in a world on the brink of explosion. The plays, novels and essays were written in Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Munich, and Moscow; they show societies dancing on the rim of a volcano.

Die Moderatorin Susanne Klingenstein ist Schriftstellerin und Literaturwissenschaftlerin. Sie unterrichtet Philosophie und Geschichte der medizinischen Kultur an der Harvard-MIT Abteilung Gesundheitswesen und –technologie an der Harvard Medical School. Sie schreibt auch regelmäßig für die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung und The Weekly Standard. Sie studierte Deutsch, Englisch, amerikanische und jüdische Literatur an der Universität Heidelberg, Brandeis University und Harvard Universität und promovierte in Amerikanistik. Ihre Bücher haben ihren Fokus auf der Verbreitung von jüdischen Intellektuellen zur Literatur- wissenschaft. Im Moment schreibt sie an einer Einführung in die jüdische Literatur.
