Helen and Kurt Wolff Translation Grant

Support for translating German literature into English

A Short Guide for N. American Publishers

The Goethe-Institut and the German Book Office have created the new Helen and Kurt Wolff Translation Grant to make the process of publishing translations more accessible: first, by providing free sample translations and second, by guaranteeing a simple and expedited translation grant. The grant is intended to assist American and Canadian publishers who are translating German literature into English.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Which books are eligible?
All fiction titles on the German Book Office Rights List are eligible. Twice a year, the Goethe-Institut and the German Book Office compile a list of approximately 12 fiction titles that are well-suited to the N. American book market.

2. What if I want to publish a German title, say a children's book or a graphic novel, that is not on this list?
Give us a call and we’ll consider the title.

3. Can I get a sample translation of the book I want to publish?
Upon request, we will commission a 25 page sample translation, at no cost to you.

4. What does the grant include?
Each fiction title on the list will automatically receive a financial grant that will cover at least 50% of the translation cost.

5. When are the deadlines?
There are no deadlines, just these easy steps:
- Discover an interesting title on the list
- Request a sample translation from us
- Inform us that you plan to publish the book
- We pledge the grant

6. What paperwork do I need?
