Join Goethe Pop Up Seattle and Elliott Bay Book Company in welcoming award-winning artist Nora Krug for a discussion of her graphic memoir “Belonging”.

Nora Krug was born decades after the fall of the Nazi regime, but the Second World War and the Holocaust cast long shadows throughout her childhood in the city of Karlsruhe, Germany. “Belonging” is the story of what she finds when, as an adult living in America, she returns to Germany to uncover the truth of her family’s involvement in the war, visiting archives, conducting research, and interviewing family members.

“Belonging” is a revelatory, visually stunning graphic memoir - equal parts graphic novel, family scrapbook, and investigative narrative - telling the story of Nora Krug’s attempt to confront and understand the historical and personal forces that have shaped her life. Her extraordinary quest, spanning continents and generations, pieces together her family’s troubling story and reflects on what it means to be a German of her generation.
During her talk, Nora Krug will give insights into the process of creating her graphic memoir, in addition to holding a reading of excerpts from “Belonging”.

Nora Krug’s drawings and visual narratives have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The Guardian, and Le Monde diplomatique. “Belonging”  was critically lauded and was selected as an NPR Book of the Year 2018 and the National Book Critic Award Winner for 2019, among other prizes. Krug is an associate professor in the Illustration Program at the Parsons School of Design in New York City.

This event is presented in partnership with the Elliott Bay Book Company.
