The Goethe-Institut is located in the heart of the Downtown area, at the gates of Chinatown. But a little more than two hundred years ago, the present site of the Goethe-Institut marked the very origins of the city of San Francisco, at that time called Yerba Buena. As you visit the site, you will discover the enormous impact and presence of San Francisco’s German community.

You are invited to discover the history behind the architecture of sites and places associated and identified with San Francisco.

You will also be introduced to many important individuals who have contributed to the colourful cultural life of the Bay Area.

Let us know what you think or suggestions you might have! We would appreciate your feedback and ideas.
