The Car – A Fascination and an Economic Factor

Copyright: Porsche AGThe fascination of the car: Germany produces roughly five million cars, and enjoys a world-wide reputation for this. The German car industry has a significant impact on the development of the entire German economy. One job in every seven depends on the car. And one-quarter of tax revenues are car-related.

The German auto industry had a turnover of EUR 202 billion in 2001. 69 % of this was accounted for by the manufacturers of vehicles and engines, just over 3 % by the producers of trailers, special bodies and containers, and 28 % by the auto parts and components industry. This means that the automotive industry, which is one of Germany’s largest industrial sectors, earned one-sixth of German industry’s entire turnover. EUR 121 billion, or 60 % of turnover, is earned abroad. World-wide, German car makers produced 10.0 million vehicles.
