Germany is famous for a lot of things: good beer, fast cars and tasty sausages, for example. But unfortunately, until now films haven’t been among the export articles for which Germany is esteemed in other countries – unjustly, in our opinion.

Even if the majority of films running week after week in German movie theaters are imports from America, in past decades German directors have produced films in a wide variety of genres that differ considerably from American blockbusters in terms of theme and style. For one thing, films dealing with the most significant events of recent German history have been made, or films that come to life through the charm of German cities’ and regions’ local color. And since German young people naturally must also go through the difficult phase of life called puberty, a few ambitious film projects on the classical problems of youth have emerged: drugs, love and the search for identity. And we can make one thing clear here: German low-budget productions are anything but cheap; on the contrary, the results are impressive, thanks to original scripts and creative directing. So watch out, Hollywood!
