General Translation Grant

General Translation Grant

For the general translation grant, priority is given to works in the following subject areas:
  • democracy, the rule of law, and civil society
  • current regional and global issues
  • the cultural dimension of European integration
  • recent German history
  • outstanding works of contemporary German literature
Consideration will also be given to:
  • classical German literature
  • contemporary drama
  • quality literature for children and young adults
US publishers are encouraged to submit their applications to the Goethe-Institut New York. If an application is accepted, the Goethe-Institut New York will forward it, together with a supporting statement, to the central office of the Goethe-Institut in Munich. There, a committee will evaluate the application. If an application is approved, the committee will decide on the amount to be granted. If an application is rejected, the Goethe-Institut New York will inform applicants directly.

Sample translations may be available for recently published German fiction titles.

The Goethe-Institut New York accepts applications year-round, but the committee in Munich meets quarterly. We strongly recommend publishers contact us regarding translation projects at the earliest possible date.

To make sure an application can be processed in time for the next committee meeting, please submit applications to the Goethe-Institut New York by the following deadlines:
  • March 25, 2013: all categories
  • June 17, 2013: fiction; literature for children and young adults
  • September 18, 2013: all categories
  • December 10, 2013: fiction; literature for children and young adults
Longer submission deadlines apply for academic works because a validation from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) is required. In order to be able to process your application at the spring committee meeting, applications must be submitted to the Goethe-Institut New York no later than January 1, 2014, and for the fall committee meeting, no later than July 1, 2013.
