Membership

Our library is open to the public and the in-house use of books, audio-visual media and information services is free of charge.

As of October 2011, we offer two, separate levels of library membership. The first is our "traditional" membership as outlined below. The second is our new "digital" membership, which entitles you to round-the-clock access to electronic media in our eLibrary (separate registration and fee required).

"Traditional" membership entitles patrons to borrowing privileges from our physical library.

To apply for library membership, we require the following:
  • proof of identity (government-issued ID)
  • proof of address (on ID or piece of mail addressed to you), telephone number and email address
  • student ID, if applicable
For members outside of New York City, we offer loans by mail under the following condition: the library will pay to mail items to members, but members are responsible for the cost of return postage.

Annual membership fees:
  • $10 membership fee for the general public
  • $5 membership fee for students or senior citizens
For the annual membership fee, we accept checks payable to Goethe-Institut New York or cash only.

Members of the library agree to abide by the library's membership and loan policies:
