Goethe-Institut San Francisco presents America's largest festival of new cinema from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, celebrating 20 years at the legendary Castro Theatre! Featuring rare appearances by: actor Tom Schilling, honored with the 2016 Spotlight Award and two films, Opening Night's Who Am I – No System is Safe and his breakthrough 2012 hit A Coffee in Berlin; comedienne Anke Engelke with the North American Premiere of Ms. Mueller Must Go, and Berlin-based electronic/acoustic band ALP, their first U.S. concert, with a new soundtrack for the 1927 silent film Berlin, Symphony of a Great City on Closing Night. Other highlights: Switzerland's Oscar entry, the family chronicle Iraqi Odyssey in 3D; International Premiere of Lars Kraume's Family Party, reminiscent of Thomas Vinterberg’s unforgettable "The Celebration"; We Are Young. We Are Strong., the gripping recount of the violent xenophobic Rostock riots in 1992. Join us for four sensational days and nights, filled with great cinematic stories of familial bonds, life-affirming adventures, young people pushing the boundaries of society, and Berlin–the festival's eclectic and inspirational namesake city.
