Award of Excellence

Award of Excellence

The Award of Excellence is an annual contest dating back to 1991. Every year a short video portrays some aspect of German life and students complete a quiz on the video.

We thank the numerous participants from all over North-America in this year’s Award of Excellence!

The Grand Prize winners have been selected and we congratulate:

  • Canada: Emaan B. von der Harry Ainlay Composite High School, Edmonton, AB
  • Mexico: Ian Adonay M. G. von der Escuela Preparatoria Número Uno UAEH, Pachuca, HID
  • USA: Austin G. von der Maumee Highschool, Maumee, OH

The students receive a scholarship for a German Language course for teens in summer 2020 in Germany.

For now it is still planned that the summer classes will be held. Concerning the COVID-19 outbreak, we are closely monitoring the information and follow the guidelines of the department of public health and the authorities. As we are not able to predict how the situation will evolve, we can’t make any definite statement about the outcome and may have to cancel the trip.

Thank you very much for your understanding!

Award of Excellence 2019: “We are the People” – 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall

1989 – that seems to be a long time ago. Maybe you heard about Germans learning to move their hips to the Brazilian sound of the No. 1 hit "Lambada" by the band Kaoma, or that Germany’s Steffi Graf and Boris Becker, both had won the tennis tournament at Wimbledon in the summer of that year.

Certainly, you do know that a hugely important event took place in November of 1989: The borders between East and West Germany opened up and people from the GDR regained their freedom and were allowed to travel, live and work wherever they wanted. On November 9th, when the borders opened, "complete strangers were hugging each other", as one reporter put it, and there were huge parties at the border crossings. The population of the GDR had succeeded in bringing change to the country in a peaceful way.

In our video, we’ll show you a German high school class visiting a memorial in Madgeburg and participating in a workshop for a better understanding of what happened during that time. Furthermore, a Berlin gallerist tells his own story of how he perceived the fall of the Wall on November 9th 1989.

If you like to travel to Germany yourself and explore the reunited country, participate in our annual competition "Award of Excellence". It’s easy: Watch the video, answer the questions of the quiz, and agree to the terms and conditions. The winners can look forward to a three-week language course in Germany in summer 2020 (pre-arranged travel expenses are covered, too).

Starting today, November 27th, the Award of Excellence 2019 has started. You should make sure to participate soon. The competition will be open until February 28, 2020.

Have fun & good luck!
