Sometimes you need to be patient to make your dreams come true. You need to focus on your goals and not let yourself be kicked off course. German singer-songwriter Tim Bendzko knows a thing or two about patience. At the age of 26, the Berliner is one of the most popular musicians in Germany and is finally following up on the promise he had given himself as a ten-year-old: to make it big.

“I decided as a young child to become famous as a musician and told myself for years that it would happen eventually,” Tim says. Nevertheless, he did not pursue this dream actively for a long time. Instead of playing an instrument, this blond and curly-haired guy spent his teenage years playing soccer and was considered a superior athlete: he went to a sports school and played for the soccer club 1. FC Union Berlin to work towards going pro - until Tim realized that he was too sensitive for sports: "I thought too much on the field and became a worse player. It dawned on me that soccer was not my future and that I had to make music.”

That’s why, at 16, Tim started to play the guitar, founded a band and wrote his first songs. However, instead of pushing his career, he decided to wait and went to university where he enrolled in religious studies to understand the world’s different cultures. He continued playing music, however, and in 2009, he won a competition and played support for one of Germany’s biggest bands, “Söhne Mannheims”, in Berlin in front of 20,000 people.

Then, all of a sudden everything went pretty fast. Tim quit his job as an auctioneer and concentrated on his music. “I finally had the feeling that everything was in place,” he says. “The lyrics, the music, my band.” Sony Music signed him and his first single “Nur noch kurz die Welt retten” (“Just save the world real quick”) was published in 2011, selling more than 300,000 copies. His debut album “Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären” (“If words were my language”) hit the German Top Ten in July 2011 and has been in the charts ever since. With his same-titled second single, Tim did not only win the „Bundesvision Song Contest“ but also more than 5,000 new Facebook fans within ten minutes after his performance on German national television.

Tim Bendzko’s music with its dreamy melancholy is as unique as his soulful voice and authentic and poetic lyrics. The 26-year-old does not make any compromises, as exemplified by this episode: a week before the label started producing his album, Tim was told that no one might understand his lyrics because they were not clear enough. His answer: "I write my lyrics so I understand them." His lyrics stayed the way they were.

Obviously, Tim Bendzko has done everything right and his success proves that it was worth waiting for the right time, that you should not give up on your dreams and ideals. Get inspired by this thought while listening to “Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären”.
