Established in 2003, the competition gute aussichten – young german photographers has come to be regarded as the most prestigious award for graduate students of photography in Germany. In contrast to other awards, gute aussichten does not award cash prizes to competition winners, but rather supports a more comprehensive program for the promotion of the next generation of young photography talent.
The initiator, Josefine Raab, describes the competition especially as an idea: to build networks and cross borders in diverse cultural contexts and institutions; to create an archive to serve as a point of reference for young German photographers working in Germany and abroad; to establish a support network for the talents in the years following the competition. The competition is just one part of the whole project: exhibitions in Germany and abroad form the project’s foundation. Every year gute aussichten presents works by the competition winners to an international audience, for example in Deichtorhallen, Hamburg.
For the fourth year in a row, the Goethe-Institut Washington is proud to announce its cooperation with the gute aussichten – young german photographers competition. The FotoGalerie is a stop for the worldwide tour of selected works by German graduate photography students. For more information about this year's event, click here.
