The Goethe-Institut Washington is located in the cultural heart of the city's revitalized downtown and is surrounded by a number of museums, galleries and theaters. Networking with a variety of educational and cultural organizations, the Goethe-Institut Washington plans and coordinates many joint projects, many of them annual events. Looking beyond our downtown neighborhood, we also take part in citywide activities—notably through our film programming, which is part and parcel of Washington's major film festivals—as well as through our ongoing cooperation with cultural institutes of other European countries. Thanks to the GoetheForum, we and our partners enjoy easy access to a state-of-the-art screening-room.

Trans-Atlantic Dialogue

Despite years of harmony and cooperation between the USA and Europe, there have been growing differences of opinion in regard to many basic issues since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Together with our European partners we are promoting a dialogue in which cultural commonalities and differences on the two sides of the Atlantic—along with their effects on political assessment and decision-making—can be more clearly identified and discussed.

Current Cultural Developments in Germany

Immigration, emigration, and freedom of movement within a larger Europe affect society in a united Germany. We put the spotlight on cultural and artistic developments that convey aspects of current social and cultural change and that may anticipate future developments. In addition to a simple presentation of cultural work, we seek to establish a network of personal contacts, particularly among younger artists.
