fremde stadt

ich liebe es
in einer fremden stadt zu sein
und durch die straßen zu gehen
als gehörte ich
hier hin
als ginge ich meiner
alltäglichen wege nach
als hätte ich
eine existenz
an diesem ort
ich liebe es
fremd zu sein
und doch ein haus
mit einem schlüssel
zu betreten
fremden menschen
ins gesicht zu sehen
als wolle ich
etwas mir bekanntes
darin entdecken
verschiedene identitäten
durchzuspielen
und doch zu wissen
wäre ich hier
so wäre ich auch ich
ich liebe es
zu wissen,
das leben
bietet viele möglichkeiten
und meines
ist nur eine
davon.

I love to be
in unfamiliar cities
and to walk their streets
as if I
belonged there
as if I went
about my daily business
as if I had lived
a lifetime
in this place
I love
to feel foreign
yet still possess
the key to some house’s
front door
to stare
into strangers’ faces
as if I were
looking there
for something I’d recognize
to act out
alternate identities
and yet be sure
that being here
made me myself
to know
that life
holds many possibilities
and that my life
is only
one of them.

About the Poem: unfamiliar city
This poem points up a fact about big-city life that is often overlooked: namely, that being unknown to others does not necessarily mean feeling helpless and alone. For a confident, self-aware individual, to be surrounded by a crowd of strangers can actually be a liberating opportunity to observe and study them from a position of relative safety - committed to nothing because those you see have no power to assign and lock you in any pre-determined role. In short: having no reputation frees you to be whoever you want to be - and to change!
