She considers the crowd in the subway
As a performance piece made of human bodies
In the space of a pair of feet
She is only a dark spell, lifeless
In the moment of closing her eyes
She applies yoga-like throat breathing
Smells the anxieties of human survival and renewal
Fall on her left and right shoulders
Breathe in, breathe out.

Für ein Stück Performance aus menschlichen Körpern.
Im Raum ihrer zwei Füße
Ist sie nur ein dunkler Zauber, leblos.
Wenn sie ihre Augen schließt,
atmet sie wie beim Yoga,

About the Poet: Wang Qian (b. 1986)
This young poet, born in Beijing, was already a publishing her verse while still in high school. She graduated from university with a degree in Theatre Studies, and is now a dramaturge (adapting scripts for performance) with a Beijing theatre company.

Describing an everyday experience in simple language is an effective way to draw readers into a poem. City dwellers in Europe and America will identify easily with the plight of this nameless woman who feels herself, even inside a crowded subway car, to be an isolated spectator struggling to regain self control and composure.
