    Contemporary German literature has been influenced by a host of issues in the past twenty years. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of consumerism and the influx of immigrants, the country has changed dramatically and with it, its literary scene.

    The fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification in 1989 brought to light the literary potential that had slumbered in the East. Authors like Thomas Brussig and Christa Wolf wrote about their take on the fateful year when the two countries were reunited and how life had been “on the other side”. They also looked ahead and reflected on the uncertainty felt by people who had lived under the confines of communism for so long.
