Recent News:

The short film competition Vietdocs ended on 05.29.2011 at the Goethe-Institut with the screenings of the 8 finalists films, with honors going to the three best entries.

Before a packed audience and in the presence of sponsors and partners of the project, the Goethe-Institut showed all qualifying short films on the theme "Climate Change - Changing my Life" by young Vietnamese filmmakers, whose films surprised with their creativity, impressive images and profundity.

Another surprise was the announcement by the Director of the TV broadcaster VTV6 that the films of all finalists of the short film competition will be broadcast by VTV6.

A jury consisting of experts from the fields of environment, culture, film and television, honored the winners in a prize ceremony.

First prize went to Ngo Thi Thanh with her film "Sand". The film of the 25-year-old filmmaker was convincing in its complexity. The film quietly shows not only the consequences of uncontrolled exploitation of raw materials, but also the political and social implications this has. Ngo Thi Thanh received a cash prize of $1,000 and continued support for the production of a full-length documentary.

Second prize went to 29-year-old filmmaker Pham Thu Hang with her film "Hai Ly”. The strong images in the film were particularly impressed. With few words, the film addresses in a poetic way the difficulties caused to fishermen by climate change. The almost painterly shots of the fishing village Hai Ly and its cathedral, impress themselves deeply in the memory of the viewer. Pham Thu Hang was awarded a prize of $700.

The competition VietDocs, a project of the Goethe-Institut Vietnam, offers a platform for short films on ecological themes to young people who are, or hope to become, documentary filmmakers.

In 2011 the focus is on climate change and its effects on personal, everyday lives. Interesting project proposals will be selected and their realization as short films will be supported, in part by several workshops at DocLab at Goethe-Institut Hanoi.

The best films in the competition will then be screened publicly in May and June 2011, their distribution will be supported, and the best three will be awarded prizes. The first-prize winner will also receive a production budget for a longer film on the same topic and will participate in the SeaDocs Festival, the young documentary film festival for SE Asia, which is organized by Goethe Institutes in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

The Goethe-Institut Vietnam and its partners wish in this way to support young documentary film and in addition to contribute to a stronger public awareness of ecological themes and their relevance for life in SE Asia.

VietDocs is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst DED and InWEnt.
