5 questions for Sello Pesa
Sello Peso, you are the artistic director of Ntsoana Contemporary Dance Theatre and the creative mind of SPINES – In House Project. We are happy to talk to you about the project and Johannesburg.
Sello Pesa. © Val Adamson1. Johannesburg’s transport system is very diverse. How do you personally move about?
Due to time constraints I mostly travel by car, sometimes by taxi and I use the Gautrain as well.
2. The performances of In House Project happen at private homes. Why do you choose those venues?
Private homes create an intimate space, people can interact and converse with each other easily. Most traditional events happen in the home spaces and this adds an air of importance to the event.
3. You’ve lived in Joburg for quite some time. How has “space” changed in the city within the last couple of years?
The space in the city has become smaller, more compact. The city is no longer solely South African when you look at it now; it speaks of the whole continent.
4. SPINES is a project that explores the transport system of the city. Why is that a focal point of your work?
Through using taxis as transportation people are placed, together, in an enclosed area which encourages communication rather than people sitting, disconnected, in their cars. This shared experience creates a common point.
5. What are your New Imaginaries for Johannesburg?
A HUGE park in the centre of the city and efficient public transport running 24 hours a day across Joburg and its surrounds - this would open up more possibilities for people to do and achieve things.
