Teaching German

Soccer is a sport only for men? No way!

The countdown has ran off: The sixth FIFA Women’s Soccer World Cup in the country of the titleholder Germany is over. From 26 June until 17 July 2011, the German players needed to stay on the ball in order to continue their winning streak from the last World Cup.

In South Africa, pupils were engaged in women’s soccer too. In the light of the Women’s Soccer World Cup, the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg started a competition for all PASCH-schools of the sub-Saharan-Africa region. The Rotary Club Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein supported this project with a generous contribution. Many submissions, also from South Africa, were handed in. The jury, consisting of Markus Bollmohr (Head of Cultural Affairs at the German Embassy, Pretoria), Rainer Dinkelacker (goalkeeping coach of the Kaizer Chiefs), Katharina von Ruckteschell-Katte (Director of the Goethe-Institut South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa) and Dr. Knuth Noke (Regional Head of the Language Department), chose the winners. Three pupils of the Mbambangalo High School in KwaZulu-Natal and two pupils of the Witteberg High School in the Free State have won main prizes.

The prize was a three-week trip to Germany attending the language course “Deutsch plus Fußball” (“German plus soccer”) during the the Women’s Soccer World Cup. The prizes were officially awarded during a visit by Mrs Seltmann, language advisor at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg, at the Mbambangalo High School on 27 May 2011. All participants received consolation prizes. Before the award ceremony, pupils reported on PASCH workshops and competitions: the theatre workshop “Sprachfluss” with the topic “The climate is changing” (Johannesburg/Germany), the PASCH street soccer tournament (Cape Town) and the competition “Mädchen am Ball” (“girls on the ball”).

Winners (Cameroon): Dackham Ange, Moguem Hans Londes, Abate Christelle, King Junior.
Winners (South Africa): Nandumiso Khuzwayo, Snethemba Nyembe, Lindokuhle Dladla (Mbambangalo High School) und Palesa Mokoena, Reitumetse Makutoane (Witteberg High School)
