Biography


Born in 1924 as Ruth Löwenthal in Fürth


1936 Emigrates with her family to South Africa

1960 Starts her career in journalism as Business Editor for "Newscheck" in Johannesburg / South Africa. Later prohibited from entering South Africa

1966 – 1968 Office director of the "Financial Mail" in Salisbury in the former South Rhodesia (currently Zimbabwe)

1969 – 1970 Works in London for the "Guardian" and the "Investors Chronicle"

1971 – 1974 Business Editor for the "Times of Zambia" and Zambia correspondent for the "Financial Times"

1975 – 1978 Heads up the Africa desk of Deutsche Welle, Cologne

1979 – 1980 Freelances in London; reports on the Lancaster House talks and founds the journalist group “Link-up”

1980 Reports on Zimbabwe’s independence

1982 Works for the "Zimbabwe Mass Media Trust" and trainer for economics journalists at the Technicon in Harare / Zimbabwe

Freelances as journalist. Founds and establishes the "Southern African Economist" and works on several books and films related to talks and seminars in Europe about the situation in South Africa

1989 Establishes the research centre “"Zimbabwe Institute for Southern Africa"

1992 Moves to England (Isle of Wight)

2005 Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize in 2005

2010 A secondary school in Aschaffenburg (Bavaria) is named after her

Today Ruth Weiss lives and works as author and freelance journalist in Germany
