Born on 21 May 1938 in Basel


1966 After studying German, French and history in Basel, Montpellier and Paris, he receives his doctoral degree with a dissertation on German Post-War-prose

1967 - 1984 Worked as freelance author and editor in Frankfurt/Main

1968 Co-founder of Verlag der Autoren

1984 Returns to Switzerland

1997 Received the Mülheim Drama Prize

2000 Received the Bertolt-Brecht-Prize of the city of Augsburg

2002 Received the Literature Prize of the Bavarian Academy of the Arts

2003 Received the City Writer-Literature-Prize of ZDF, 3sat and the city of Mainz

2007 Received the Friedrich-Hölderlin-Prize

  Lives in Zurich
