“Dialogue across Borders. The Riese Collection”
East German Gallery Art Forum (Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie), Regensburg
The East German Gallery Art Forum in Regensburg is showing a selection of works from the Riese Collection. The art collector Hans-Peter Riese, born in 1941, is a journalist. He worked as a foreign correspondent in Prague, Moscow and Washington, and at each of his stations he bought art. In this way the Riese Collection was created over a period of about fifty years and comprises the painting, sculpture and graphic art of Czech, Russian and American artists. The focus of the collection is on the art of the 1960s and 70s, on Concrete Art and Op Art.
The collection includes works by Czech and Russian artists such as Kolar, Kubicek, El Lissitzky and Tschesnokow, by American artists such as De Kooning und Warhol, and by German artists such as Günther Uecker. Thus the Riese Collection unites in retrospect artists formerly separated by the Iron Curtain, a border between East and West that rendered artistic exchange virtually impossible.
