“Only Sculpture!”
Mannheim Kunsthalle
In April 2014 the Mitzlaff building of the Mannheim Kunsthalle will be pulled down. The wing of the Kunsthalle, which was built in 1983 to house the sculpture collection and which includes a deep bunker that serves as a depot, has construction defects and can no longer meet current requirements for an exhibition hall. By 2017 a new building will be erected in its place. The architects Gerkan, Marg and Partner have been awarded the construction contract. The new building will be financed with the help of a 50 million euro donation by SAP founder Hans-Werner Hector and his wife.

Before the wrecking ball gets to work on the Mitzlaff annex, however, its red sandstone walls are housing for one last time a sculpture exhibition. It is entitled Sculpture Only! (Nur Skulptur!) and comprises 400 exhibits, half of the Mannheim sculpture collection. The exhibition, which covers 2,000 square metres and three floors, has been compiled by sculptor Bogomir Ecker together with his fellow artists John Bock, Thomas Hirschhorn, Thomas Rentmeister, Roman Signer and Kiki Smith.
