“Wilhelm Schürmann. Photographs from Germany”
Sprengel-Museum, Hanover
A petrol station on the corner, power lines forming a star over a housing development and a road junction with a turn-off to “Lüttich/Liége”: if you view Wilhelm Schürmann’s black-and-white photographs, you are submerged into the Bonn of the old West Germany of the late seventies. The photographs are currently on display at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover under the title: Bilder aus Deutschland (Photographs from Germany).

Schürmann, who was born in 1946 in Dortmund, is known not only as a photographer but also as a collector: together with his wife Gaby, he has been building the Schürmann Collection since the 1980s and runs an exhibition space in Berlin.

The Sprengel Museum complements his Photographs from Germany with moving pictures: parallel to the exhibition, it is showing Wim Wender’s film Im Lauf der Zeit (Kings of the Road in English), also black-in-white and from the same time as Schürmann’s photographs.
