Matthias Böttger

Biographical Information

Matthias Böttger (*1974) is an architect and curator based in Berlin and Linz. He has been creative director of the DAZ – Deutsches Architektur Zentrum – in Berlin since 2011, and Professor of Sustainable Architecture + Future Tactics (SAFT) at the Institute of Space and Design, Kunstuniversität Linz since 2012. With his Berlin-based practice raumtaktik – office from a better future, Böttger has been exploring concepts of space and working on spatial interventions since 2003.

Böttger studied architecture and urban planning in Karlsruhe and London and went on to work as an architect in Cologne, Berlin and Paris. His academic activities began at the Bauhaus Dessau, where he taught from 2005 to 2006. This was followed by the University of Stuttgart (2006–07) and ETH Zurich (2007–11), where he lectured in art and architecture. From 2007 to 2008 Böttger was a visiting professor for Art and Public Space at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. From 2007 to 2009 he was a fellow of Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, and in 2010 he became the director of aut. architektur und tirol, an architectural association in Innsbruck.

Matthias Böttger has curated and organised numerous exhibitions and contributions to biennials. In 2006 he curated the travelling exhibition “Fanshop of Globalisation”, and in 2008 he and fellow architect Friedrich von Borries were the general commissioners and curators of “Updating Germany – 100 Projects for a Better Future”, the German contribution to the 11th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale. In 2013–14 he curated the travelling exhibition “WELTSTADT – Who creates the city?”, which was shown in Berlin, Prague, Johannesburg, New York, Riga, Plovdiv, Bangalore and Zagreb, among others. Within the framework of the WELTSTADT project, he also curated “Nós Brasil! We Brazil!” as the German contribution to the 10th São Paulo Architecture Biennial in 2013.
