Biographical Information
Dr Veit Görner, born in Munich in 1953, has been director of the kestnergesellschaft in Hannover since 2003. He lives in Hannover and Stuttgart.
Görner studied social science and pedagogy in Tübingen and art history in Stuttgart. The theme of his doctorate was “the viewer as protagonist – models of participation in art in the early 20th century.”
Since 1984, he has worked as a curator for contemporary art in several institutions including Verein Archiv Stuttgart, Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (director 1987-1990), the sculpture project “Platzverführung” in “KulturRegion Stuttgart” (together with Rudi Fuchs, 1991-1992), the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds (1995), and the Sao Paulo biennial (1996). From 1995 Veit Görner was curator at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg and in 2003 he was appointed director of the kestnergesellschaft in Hannover.
The range of exhibitions curated by Görner in Wolfsburg include “Full House – Young British Art” (1996/1997) and “German Open 1999. Contemporary Art in Germany” (1999/2000).
The kestnergesellschaft, under the directorship of Görner, has organised extensive solo exhibitions – often for the first time in Germany – with the following internationally renowned artists, among others: Franz Ackermann, Barbara Kruger, Chris Ofili, Isaac Julien, Thomas Hirschhorn (2006), Michel Majerus, Candida Höfer, Sarah Morris, Gilbert & George, Santiago Sierra (2005), Peter Doig, Gary Hume, Cindy Sherman, Miquel Barceló, Fischli & Weiss (2004) and Anton Corbijn (2003).
