As a curator, I see my role first and foremost as being a mediator in the communication of artistic ideas. A fundamental prerequisite for this process is the establishment of a direct dialogue with the artist concerned. I am particularly interested in socially oriented artistic approaches and consequently prefer figurative constellations, irrespective of the artist’s chosen medium – whether painting, photography, video or installation.
Since becoming director of the Kunstmuseen Krefeld I have actively encouraged artists to develop their exhibitions in response to the specific location – the villas designed and built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Exhibitions such as those mounted by Robert Longo, Eric Fischl, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Shiro Matsui, Kiki Smith or John Baldessari have something of a paradigmatic quality in this respect.
