Dr. Brigitte Kölle, born in 1967 in Tübingen, has been director of the Gallery of Contemporary Art at Kunsthalle Hamburg since March 2012.
After graduating with a degree in cultural studies from the University of Hildesheim, Kölle completed the postgraduate Program in Museum Studies at New York University in 1992–93. She went on to obtain her PhD in 2005 with a thesis on the artist and dealer Konrad Lueg/Fischer entitled “Die Kunst des Ausstellens. Untersuchungen zum Werk des Künstlers/Kunstvermittlers Konrad Lueg/Fischer (1939–1996)”.
Having worked as a curatorial assistant in various art institutions, including the Museum Fridericianum in Kassel and the Dia Center for the Arts in New York, Kölle was appointed curator of the Froehlich Collection in Stuttgart (1993–94). In the role of curator and academic head of Portikus in Frankfurt am Main (1994–98), under the directorship of Prof. Kasper König, she devised and curated more than 25 exhibitions and publications, including early solo shows by Steve McQueen, Andreas Gursky, Wolfgang Tillmans, Marlene Dumas, Andreas Slominski, Ayse Erkmen, Matthew Barney, Gregor Schneider and many more. From 1999 to 2003 Kölle held the post of curator at the Institute of Visual Arts in Milwaukee (USA), where she mounted American debut exhibitions by European artists such as Manfred Pernice, Ceal Floyer and David Claerbout. Since then she has curated exhibition projects in many international art institutions: PS1 and Goethe-Haus, New York; Frankfurter Kunstverein; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Venice Biennale; Lenbachhaus, Munich; Konrad Fischer Galerie, Düsseldorf; K21 Kunstsammlung NRW (Art collection of North Rhine-Westphalia), Düsseldorf.
Kölle has written and edited numerous publications on contemporary art, including “Portikus 1987–1997” (1997), “Manfred Pernice: Infrastructure” (2003), “Gregor Schneider: Weisse Folter” (2007, with Julian Heynen), as well as monographs on Boris Mikhailov, Janet Cardiff, Ulrike Grossarth and Matthew Barney. Brigitte Kölle’s book “okey dokey Konrad Fischer” (2007) features interviews she conducted with Bruce Nauman, Gilbert & George, Carl Andre, Johannes Cladders, Kasper König and Thomas Schütte, among others.
