Susanne Meyer-Büser

Biographical Information

Dr Susanne Meyer-Büser, born in 1963 in Gütersloh, has been curator of contemporary art and classical modernism at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf since 2009.

Meyer-Büser studied art history and German in Osnabrück. She gained her PhD in 1994, under the supervision of Franz Joachim Verspohl, with a thesis on Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) portrait painting. From 1994 to 1997 she completed a postdoctoral trainee programme at the Sprengel Museum Hannover. Between 1997 and 2006 Meyer-Büser worked as a freelance curator, amongst others for the Von der Heydt-Museum in Wuppertal and the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art in Karlsruhe, and served as the director of kunstraum münchen in Munich. During this period she also taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, the University of Hildesheim and Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG). From 2006 to 2009 Meyer-Büser was head of the painting and sculpture collection at the Sprengel Museum Hannover. Since 2009 she has held the post of curator at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, where she conceives and organizes exhibitions on classical modernist and contemporary art for the K20 and K21. Since 2010 she has been responsible for the Artists’ Rooms at the K21, an ongoing programme of temporary displays devoted to individual contemporary artists. In the same year she also became a member of the commission for the promotion of Kunstvereine [art associations] in Lower Saxony.
