In order to standardise the appearance of correspondence, the Berlin engineer Dr Walter Porstmann developed the A4 format in 1922. The starting format is A0, measuring 841 mm by 1189 mm. When folded four times, you get A4 paper (210 mm x 297 mm). Every German Institute for Standardisation (DIN) format derives from doubling or halving. For inexplicable reasons, graphic artists cannot stand pages in A4 format.
