Monuments of German design

THE ONE THAT GOES PLOP

When the working group at the Deutsche Brunnen Association that had been set up to design a standard bottle tested consumers' response to a first design model in 1969, it was seen as "eastern" by the test persons, who associated it with "onion domes", "the Kremlin Tower" and "Cossack coffee". So the bottle was then decorated with little bubbles, labelled and given a more feminine "waist". Now consumers say it has a "joie de vivre". Today, the bottle still stands under the sink or in the fridge of every German household, and its joie de vivre is as strong as ever before. It can also be found in the toolbox, because it makes a good hammer.
